Letterpress - Printing Process
  • Letterpress is a form of relief printing. The printing area stands above the non-printing area.
  • It was the first printing process
  • The printing area is inked and then pressed against the paper
  • This process is quite slow.
  • Rotary letterpress is used to speed things up. It uses an aluminium plate which holds and text wrapped around a drum and is rolled over the paper
  • Just like the other methods of printing each of the four colours (CMYK) are added seperately.
  • Letterpress was widely used up until the late 1980's
  • Rotary letterpress is a very economical way of producing text which is frequently reprinted
  • CAD and DTP are not compatible with Letterpress, so newspapers are now printed using Lithography

  • Letterpress is not suitable for colour pictures, photos or fine detail.
  • Letterpress is use for printing some books and some packaging
